The book NightJohn is an amazing book. One of the best I have ever read so far about slavery. It taught me what the slaves' lives were really like. Sarny, the main character in the story is a brave little girl. Her mammy is also very brave for saving Sarny so she wouldn't lose her. John is just the bravest person in the book because he is teaching Sarny how to read. He will get in trouble but he doesn't care. He just wants to teach her anything she wants to learn. This is the only way for the slaves to gain true freedom.

I liked this book because it was very graphic and taught me about slavery back then.  You would like this book if you liked the history of slavery and liked action. Also if you like scary and gory stuff because there is torture in this book. So read this book if you want to learn the hardships of slaves back then.

Nightjohn is a great book. I have learned a lot about slavery  by reading this book. It's gory and interesting all at the same time.  The author, Gary Paulson, is very good at using discriptive language.

I thought this book was great.   It really showed the life of a slave during the civil war, at first I could not understand the basis of the book, but when I got into it I couldn't stop reading.  It showed that slavery was dreadful and that the southern white people treated them like they were nothing.

I thought this was a very detailed, educational story on what life was like for slaves back in the 1850's.  In the beginning it was hard to understand, but then you learn the narrarator is a twelve year old girl who has never learned how to read or write.  You willl love this book!
